Starting to Settle In

Temporary Accommodation

If you are one of the fortunate ones, you will be able to stay over with a friend or relative. We ask that you DO NOT DRIVE directly from the airport. It is not safe when you are jetlagged and tired.

Some people will come alone if on a job search or starting a job, and some families will travel together.

Very importantly remember regardless of how “new” you are to New Zealand you have rights , The Citizen Advice Bureau is a lovely organisation whom you can go to for legal advise and volunteering opportunities or for anything that may have occurred to you and you are not sure of what your rights are . This organisation offers their assistance to anyone in New Zealand regardless of  citizenship status.

Soft Landings

There are some very convenient hotels at the airport for an overnight stay. It’s not cheap but it’s worth considering.

All regions in New Zealand will have a selection of Air B&B‘s and you can book directly with them. An alternative is a relatively inexpensive holiday park which are generally located outside the cities.

Homestays

A number of Saffas offer Homestays. There you will stay in the home of a South African who often picks you up from the airport and assists with opening bank accounts and converting drivers licence. These are not free! They are however the softest landing possible. Please remember you are in someone’s home, so you are a paying guest

We will have lots of options on this page and they change frequently as homes fill up or become available

Furnishing your rental

There are so many options to furnish your place cost effectively while you are waiting for your container. Or if you have not shipped a container and are buying in New Zealand, there are also options.

At the bottom of the list is list is “begging”. Please avoid asking others on social media to help with furniture or set up a give a little page. New Zealand is a small place and the stigma will follow you.

If you don’t mind used furniture, you can get some bargains at the “op shops”. These are places like SPCA Shops, St Johns, Salvation Army shops and others. There are some bargains to be had there.

There is no need to buy utensils and small appliances second hand. Shops like Kmart and the Warehouse have inexpensive crockery, cutlery, kettles and the like.

If you are waiting on a container, you can rent certain appliances such as fridges, washing machines and dryers.

Beds can be expensive in New Zealand if you are buying new. Interesting fact – a NZ bed is equivalent to a SA extra length. So SA fitted sheets will not fit a NZ bed, but NZ sheets will fit a SA bed. You can get less expensive beds at places like Target or Big Save

If you are looking for a temporary solution, you can get a foam mattress from Para Rubber or inflatable beds from the Warehouse. Lots of migrants camp out while waiting for a container. It’s a wonderful family experience

Electronics and whiteware are competitive in NZ, and stores like Harvey Norman, or Noel Leeming have extensive ranges. You can negotiate cash discounts on large purchases.

Don’t buy new in SA and keep in original packaging. You will probably have to pay duties. And remember, if you buy in SA, buy an international brand. No Defy fridges. You will also lose your warranty when you move over, so consider this carefully if you want to buy sophisticated equipment like computers and mobile phones
